How to Get from Palermo Airport to City Centre

Last updated: May 2026
Quick summary: The most popular options are the Prestia e Comandè bus (€6.90, ~50–60 min) for independent travellers or a private transfer (€45–65, 25–40 min) for the most comfortable arrival. Official taxis run fixed fares of around €35–45 and take the same time as a private car.

Palermo Falcone Borsellino Airport — still called Punta Raisi by locals — sits about 35 km west of the city centre along the A29 motorway. The landscape between the airport and the city is striking: limestone mountains dropping into the sea, fishing villages clinging to the coast, and then suddenly the sprawling, chaotic, magnificent capital of Sicily rising up before you. Getting from the airport into the city is straightforward, but choosing the wrong transport option can mean an inflated price, unnecessary stress, or a long detour. Here is the complete, honest guide.

Option 1 — Prestia e Comandè Bus (Best Value)

The Prestia e Comandè coach service is the gold standard for independent travellers on a budget. White and blue coaches depart directly from outside the arrivals hall — turn right as you exit and you will see them immediately, next to a clear sign. They run roughly every 30 minutes throughout the day and into the evening.

The Politeama stop is ideal if you are staying in the new city or anywhere near Via Libertà. The final stop at Stazione Centrale puts you a short walk from the southern edge of the historic centre, including the Kalsa and Ballarò neighbourhoods. From there, a brief taxi or walk gets you almost anywhere in the old city.

One thing to know: the bus sits in the same traffic as everyone else on the A29. There is no express lane. In peak summer and on long weekends, the journey can stretch past an hour. It is still great value, but set realistic expectations if you are arriving on a busy afternoon.

Option 2 — Official Taxi (Most Convenient Door-to-Door)

Palermo airport operates a fixed-rate taxi tariff for journeys to the city centre, which eliminates the risk of a metered fare inflated by traffic. As of 2026, the fixed rate to most addresses in central Palermo is €35–45 depending on the exact destination zone. The taxi rank is outside the arrivals exit, clearly signed.

How to avoid unofficial drivers

This is important. Palermo airport has a persistent problem with unlicensed drivers who approach travellers inside the terminal — confident, friendly, often with good English. They will quote you €60–100 and are entirely unregulated. Never accept a ride from someone who approaches you before you reach the exit. The official taxi rank is outside, staffed by licensed white taxis with a Comune di Palermo licence visible on the door panel. If in doubt, walk past anyone who approaches you inside the building and go straight to the official queue.

Option 3 — Private Transfer (Best for Families and Groups)

A pre-booked private transfer combines the door-to-door convenience of a taxi with full price certainty, a driver who is tracking your flight, and no queuing regardless of what time you land. For anyone travelling with young children, significant luggage, or arriving on a late-night flight when the bus has stopped running and the taxi queue is unpredictable, a private transfer is the right choice.

At Le Sicilien, we arrange private airport transfers for all our guests as a standard part of the welcome experience. Whether you are staying at the Moncada de Luna in the heart of the historic centre or at Villa Harmony near Mondello beach, simply share your flight details at the time of booking and your driver will be waiting. There is no additional stress on arrival — and in a city as lively and complex as Palermo, starting your holiday smoothly makes a genuine difference.

Option 4 — Car Rental (Approach with Caution)

All the major rental companies — Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Europcar, Maggiore — have desks in the arrivals hall. Renting a car is a sensible decision if your plans include independent exploration of the Sicilian interior: Agrigento, the Madonie mountains, Cefalù, the salt pans of Trapani. But there is a critical caveat for anyone staying in Palermo itself.

The ZTL (Zona a Traffico Limitato): Palermo's historic centre is a restricted traffic zone monitored by cameras around the clock. Entering without authorisation results in automatic fines of €80–150 per camera passed, billed to your rental card weeks after you return home — often after you have forgotten you even drove through. The boundaries of the ZTL are not always obvious, and many satellite navigation systems do not reliably flag them. Most accommodation in the centro storico either falls inside the ZTL or is accessed via streets that border it.

If you need a car for day trips, the practical solution is to rent it only for the days you actually plan to leave the city, keeping it parked at a peripheral garage (Piazza Filangieri is a reliable option with reasonable daily rates). For your city days, use taxis, the local bus network, and your feet — which is how most Palermitans navigate anyway.

Comparison at a Glance

Prestia e Comandè bus — €6.90 — 50–60 min — drop at Politeama or Centrale station

Official taxi — €35–45 fixed — 25–40 min — door to door, no booking required

Private transfer — €45–65 — 25–40 min — driver waits in arrivals, price fixed in advance

Car rental — variable — 30–45 min driving — but ZTL fines and parking are a serious risk in the city

Practical Tips for a Smooth Arrival

Peak traffic windows

The A29 motorway between Punta Raisi and Palermo can become genuinely congested on Friday afternoons from around 4 pm, on Sunday evenings, and throughout July and August — particularly around the Mondello and Sferracavallo junctions. If your flight lands during these windows, add 20–30 minutes to any estimated journey time, regardless of which transport option you choose.

Late-night arrivals

The last Prestia e Comandè departure from the airport is typically around midnight. If you land after that, a taxi from the official rank or a pre-arranged private transfer are your only options. We always recommend booking a transfer in advance for late arrivals — at 1 am the taxi rank can occasionally be quiet, meaning a longer wait than expected.

Return journey to the airport

The Prestia e Comandè bus departs from Piazza Ruggero Settimo (in front of the Politeama theatre) and from Palermo Centrale station. For the return trip in summer, allow at least 2.5 hours before your departure time. A private transfer remains the most reliable option if you have an early morning or tightly timed flight — your driver will be there on time regardless of what the traffic is doing.

What to expect on arrival

Palermo airport is compact and relatively straightforward to navigate. Baggage claim is on the ground floor; arrivals exit onto the same level. The bus stop, taxi rank, and rental car desks are all within a short walk of the exit. The terminal can feel chaotic during the summer peak — particularly in July and August when multiple flights land close together — but if you know where you are going it rarely takes more than 10–15 minutes to be on your way.

Which Option is Right for You?

If you are a solo traveller or a couple, travelling light, and staying anywhere near Piazza Politeama or within walking distance of Palermo Centrale: the Prestia e Comandè bus is excellent — comfortable, reliable, and under €7.

If you are a family of three or four, have checked luggage with everyone, or are arriving late in the evening: a private transfer makes clear sense. Splitting the cost between four people brings it close to bus price per head, with none of the uncertainty. And if you are staying at a Le Sicilien property, the transfer is part of our welcome — there is nothing to arrange on the day beyond sending us your flight number.

If you simply want to get moving without any planning: join the official taxi queue outside arrivals. The fixed fare means you will not be overcharged, and you will be at your hotel within 40 minutes.
