Spring (March to May) is an excellent time to visit Palermo. Temperatures are pleasant, summer crowds haven't arrived, and prices are 20-35% lower than peak season — except for Easter week, which is a significant exception.

March — mild and uncrowded

March temperatures average 15-18°C — comfortable for walking but cool in the evenings. The sea is 14-15°C (too cold for swimming). The historic center is the clear choice: all monuments accessible, no queues, mild conditions. Prices are at near-winter levels. Perfect for culture-focused travellers. Mondello is quiet and sea properties are not yet at full service.

April — peak spring, Easter warning

April averages 17-22°C with pleasant conditions. This is when Palermo starts to feel alive again after winter. However: Easter week brings a sharp price spike (25-40%) and reduced availability across all accommodation types. If your trip overlaps with Easter, book 6-8 weeks in advance. Outside of Easter, April is excellent and still 20-25% below summer prices.

May — the sweet spot before summer

May is arguably the best single month to visit Palermo. Temperatures reach 20-23°C, the sea warms to around 20-21°C (swimmable for many), and summer prices haven't hit yet. Mondello opens properly in May and is worth considering alongside the historic center. The Zingaro Nature Reserve (90 minutes by car) is at its visual peak in May — wildflowers and cool hiking conditions. Book 4-6 weeks ahead for May stays.

Spring vs summer: the price case

In the historic center, spring prices run 20-35% below July-August. A Mondello stay in May is 15-25% cheaper than August. The tradeoff: the sea is cooler and crowds are smaller, which many travellers prefer. If your priority is swimming daily, wait until June. If your priority is monuments, markets and excursions, spring is better value.

FAQ

Is Palermo warm in March?

Yes by most European standards — 15-18°C daytime. Bring a jacket for evenings. The sea is too cold to swim, but the city is excellent.

Is Easter week good for Palermo?

The city has impressive Holy Week processions, but prices spike 25-40% and accommodation fills fast. Book well ahead or avoid if you're price-sensitive.

When does Mondello open in spring?

Mondello beach services begin in earnest in May. In March-April it's quiet and some facilities are limited.

Which spring month has the best value?

May — warm enough for the sea, all services open, below summer prices, and the Zingaro is at its most beautiful.
