Palermo's historic center is one of Europe's most walkable city centers. No car is needed for the monuments, markets and most of the city experience. The question is mainly about excursions.

The historic center: fully on foot

All four historic mandamenti — Kalsa, Albergheria (Ballarò market), Capo and Vucciria — are within 20 minutes' walk of each other. Palazzo dei Normanni, the Cathedral, the Quattro Canti, the main markets and the seafront promenade are all accessible without transport. For historic center stays, a car adds no value for city visits.

Getting to Mondello without a car

AMAT bus 806 connects the city center (stop at Piazza Sturzo, near Politeama theater) to Mondello. Journey time is 40-50 minutes. Tickets cost €1.40 and are valid for 90 minutes. The bus runs frequently in summer (every 10-15 minutes) and hourly in winter. A taxi from the center to Mondello costs €20-25 and takes 20-30 minutes. For one round trip, the bus is fine; for daily sea trips, a taxi might be worth it.

Reaching Monreale by public transport

Monreale (famous for its Norman cathedral mosaic program) is reachable by AMAT bus 389 from Piazza dell'Indipendenza, near Palazzo dei Normanni. Journey: 20-25 minutes, €1.40. This is one of Sicily's unmissable sites and entirely doable without a car.

Train excursions from Palermo

Palermo's Stazione Centrale connects to regional trains. Cefalù (medieval coastal town): about 1 hour, around €5. Agrigento (Valley of the Temples): about 2 hours, around €9. Both are excellent day trips without a car — trains run multiple times per day. Segesta and Selinunte are more difficult by public transport and better done with a car or organized tour.

What is harder without a car

The Zingaro Nature Reserve (coastal hiking, 90km west of Palermo) is difficult to reach by public transport. Organized day tours from Palermo exist and are worth considering. The provincial seafront south of Palermo (where the Le Sicilien seafront villa is) also requires a car or taxi. If your itinerary focuses on the city and Mondello, no car is needed at all.

Taxis and apps in Palermo

Palermo taxis are metered. The main app is "itTaxi" (works in Palermo). Standard rates: center to Mondello €20-25, center to airport €45-55. Taxis are readily available near Stazione Centrale, Politeama and in the historic center. Uber does not operate in Palermo.
