Palermo's Falcone-Borsellino airport is 35 kilometers from the city center. The question of whether to stay near the airport has a clear practical answer for most travellers.

Why staying near the airport is usually a mistake

The area around Palermo airport (Cinisi/Terrasini) is a suburban and light industrial zone with almost nothing to walk to. Restaurants and services are limited. Staying there costs you proximity to everything you came to Palermo to see, while saving maybe 20-30 minutes on your last morning. For most trips, that tradeoff makes no sense. Base yourself in the historic center or Mondello, and handle the airport transfer separately.

Airport to city: the Prestia e Comandé shuttle

The most popular option is the Prestia e Comandé coach service. It runs between the airport and the city center (via Via Libertà, Politeama, Stazione Centrale) roughly every 30 minutes. Journey time is 50-55 minutes. Ticket cost is approximately €7. Buy tickets at the airport or on the coach. For most travellers, this is the best option — comfortable, frequent, cheap.

Airport to city: taxi

A taxi from the airport to the historic center costs €45-55 (metered, official taxis). Journey time varies from 35 to 50 minutes depending on traffic — the highway section is fast, but city traffic can add time. This is significantly more expensive than the shuttle but useful for late night arrivals when the shuttle has stopped running or when travelling with a lot of luggage.

Airport to city: rental car

All major car rental companies are represented at Falcone-Borsellino. If you're planning excursions that require a car (Zingaro, Agrigento, Segesta), picking up at the airport and dropping off before departure is the logical approach. Note: parking in Palermo's historic center is difficult and expensive. Consider picking up the car mid-trip if most of your time is in the city.

When staying near the airport does make sense

There is one scenario where staying near the airport is reasonable: a very early morning departure (before 6am) when no shuttle runs and you want to avoid a 1am taxi to the airport. In that case, one night near the airport is pragmatic. Otherwise, spend your Palermo nights in Palermo.
