Both Palermo's main train station (Stazione Centrale) and its ferry port are within or adjacent to the historic center. Understanding where they actually are helps choose the right base.
Where is Stazione Centrale?
Palermo's main train station sits on the southeast edge of the historic center. From the station, it's 10-15 minutes' walk to the Kalsa quarter and the Arab-Norman monuments. Palazzo dei Normanni is about 20-25 minutes on foot, or a short taxi ride. The station area itself — around Piazza Giulio Cesare — has a somewhat worn character; most visitors pass through rather than linger. Staying immediately next to the station offers no real advantage over staying further into the historic center.
Where is the Porto di Palermo?
The main ferry port (where boats arrive from Naples, Genoa and the Aeolian Islands) is on the north side of the historic center, near the Vucciria and Kalsa quarters. It's about 10-15 minutes' walk from the port gate to the center of the Kalsa district. The port area itself is functional, not scenic. Again: staying in the historic center proper is almost always a better choice than staying right on the port.
The actual advantage: both are in the historic center zone
The good news is that Palermo is compact. Both the station and the port are within walking distance of the main historic neighborhoods. If you're arriving by ferry or train and staying in the historic center, you can walk or take a short €5-8 taxi. There's no need to choose accommodation specifically "near" either — just stay in the center and you're near both.
When proximity to the station matters
There's one case where station proximity is useful: a very short transit stay (arriving late, leaving early next morning) where you want to minimize travel. In this case, a hotel within 5 minutes of Stazione Centrale makes logistics simpler. For any stay of 2 nights or more, prioritize the quality of the historic center location over proximity to the station.
Arriving by ferry: first night in the center
Ferry arrivals (especially overnight ferries from Naples or Genoa) typically dock in the morning. If you arrive tired, a historic center apartment within 15 minutes' walk means you can drop luggage and start immediately. Le Sicilien's historic center apartments are all within this range of the port.
